REPORT ON THE AMAZON RIVER

Within the framework of the Annual Meeting of the Federation of Green Parties of the Americas, that took place in Iquitos, Peru, from October 12 to 15 2005, representatives of the Green Parties, made a journey through the mazon River to evaluate the present critical situation of this important reservoir of water of the planet, whose level has descended dramatically in a few weeks, surpassing all the historical records existing up to date
.

The Representatives of the Green Parties of the Americas during a route by diverse zones of the Amazon River

Among the main factors evaluated were::

  • The dramatic reduction of the waters level of the Amazon River and its impact in the ecosystems, human biodiversity and populations.

In the photo it is appraised the sedimentation and unevenness of the Amazon River.

  • The journey allowed to make an evaluation of the climatic change and its serious consequences, as it has become evident in the Amazon Peruvian region.

Photo shows another angle of the low historical level of the Amazon River.

  • Because of the low levels of the river, it is possible to observe the served waters that are source of high ontamination of this reservoir of water

Previously, these black waters that fall on the river were not visible
because the level was high and surpassed this unloading of effluents.

  • The loss in the water's' level is directly tied to the deforestation and the criminal illicit sale of the lumber products without effective regulations

This can be appreciated on the river banks
Where there are many lumber products exploitations

Other subjects reviewed by the representatives of the Green Parties during their journey through the Amazon:

  • The hydrocarbon contamination by the boats.
  • The drastic problem of the lack of fish in the river, that causes starvation and imbalance in the area. Also the dead fish and the state of decomposition caused by the contamination of the Amazon, which causes diarrhea and other diseases among the population.
  • The critical situation of potable water for the population.
  • The critical poverty of the region.
  • The drought of the Amazon has also contributed to the Forest Fire appearance, as much in Peru and Brazil, like in other countries of the region.

All this situation represents one more alert call Because the uncontrolled hydrocarbon consumption that, with the accelerated destruction of the forest ecosystems of the planet and mainly of the Amazonian region, will increase the global heating of the planet bringing severe climatic consequences that are expressed in a growth of natural disasters.

For that reason, the Federation of the Green Parties of the Americas , summons the United Nations so that it will support immediately a world-wide meeting where a Protocol is designed to contain the lineaments necessary to stop the destruction of the jungles of the planet, whose imminent disappearance will culminate in a global ecological chaos.

The FPVA invites the United States and all those countries that have not yet joined the Protocol of Kyoto, to sign it and fortify the global efforts to reduce the emissions of the CO2 that overheat the atmosphere and cause dramatic climatic changes.
